About
School boards nationwide are being pressured by anti-public education groups to alter their curricula and remove books from classrooms and libraries in the name of 'protecting' children from 'dangerous' and 'inappropriate' ideas; in practice, this has amounted to objecting to work written by and/or or emphasizing the experiences of marginalized people, particularly people of color and members of the LGBTQIA+ community.
This is not a liberal or conservative issue: it's a vote of no confidence in our public schools' capacity to help students become informed citizens and participants in our democracy. Censorship is not the answer and can only be detrimental to learning outcomes.
Dutchess County Public Education Allies (DCPEA) is a grassroots organization of Dutchess County residents. Our aim is to empower our neighbors to inform themselves about—and fight back against—the regressive, anti-diversity platforms on which multiple local school board candidates are running.
